When my first daughter was born, I was young, newly married, and living in a new city with no friends and no family. Even though my husband was and always has been very supportive, I knew I needed help.

How often are you off in another world when you are with your child? We all struggle to give our children enjoyable, undivided time together with us.

My nearly 3-year-old daughter knows what she wants and wants it "right now, Mama, right now!" She has also been involved in some "push and shove" dialogues with other children. The immediacy of her needs is expressed verbally with as much drama and whine as she can muster and is occasionally punctuated with a push or kick, especially when the other person isn't doing what she wants.

I remember when the first edition of the book, Attached at the Heart, was released in 2009 – Nurturings’ 15th anniversary since its founding by the book’s coauthors, Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker.
I have stood beside a screaming toddler while bouncing a crying baby in a checkout line at the store. I am satisfied with my parenting approach, yet I admit that some part of me does care about the opinions of others.
What helps you when parenting in public?
It's important for me to help my children develop empathy. I believe it makes for a more peaceful home.
How do you help your child learn empathy during moments of stress?
For me, early separation and divorce were messy and complicated.
